MP3 players flash memory: Very different in price and performance

The amount of memory, ease of use and added features, the key to a good choice

We analyzed nine MP3 players flash memory that cost 85 euros from Acer Advanced (has 512 MB of capacity, equivalent to as many minutes of music, about 8 hours) to 210 euros for Ipod Nano (with 2 GB of capacity, about 32 hours). Paradoxically, Mpio FG100, one of the most expensive players (157 euros), is the least capacity: barely fit inside (256 Mb) about four hours of MP3 music. The best value for money is Nanoplus Creative Zen (113 euros, 512 Mb), one of the most appreciated in the use test. Another option is Sony NW-E105 (104 euros, 512 Mb), the lowest rating from the users but with a battery that lasts much longer than that of the other players. Those who prefer an MP3 player that also reads the free format Ogg should opt for Samsung YP-ST5X, the only scholars who understand freedom songs in this format.

The MP3 music player for flash memory devices are smaller and lighter than their predecessors supplement walkman and discman. The music is passed from one computer to these devices in MP3 format, so you have to have a PC to change the music inside. The MP3 files can be "down" the Internet (either by paying in a store such as Itunes, and directly from the artists website that offered free, and using a file sharing system) or make them yourself, from audio CDs to the system. The fact that the internal memory of these players is 'flash' and not a hard drive has the disadvantage that their capacity is more limited: the largest of those studied, Ipod Nano, has only 2 Gb hard drive when they have dozens of 'gigas'. In return, the 'flash' are more manageable and, having no moving parts, shocks which might be due to user movement do not affect reproduction or damage to equipment, making them suitable for use while playing sport .

"They resist falls? As is common for MP3 players from falling resistance was found. This is introduced into a tumbling barrel for 25 laps, equivalent to 50 strokes as those who may suffer in everyday use. At the end of the test steels caused damage that stops working, and the iPod Nano, but still worked, suffered numerous scratches on the screen, although they were small and shallow. The rest showed no damage whatsoever. Was found, moreover, the durability of the headset had received a drive of 10 Newtons for a minute, and 1,000 push-pull 90 degrees with a 2.5 Newton. None stopped working. Headphone cables longer the Acer, Creative and Sony, while the shorter the Samsung and Blu-Sens. Ipod Shuffle includes a second set of headphones.

In a player that is usually carried in the pocket is welcome to be lighter and smaller. The smallest of the iPod Shuffle is studied, followed by Blu-Sens (31% larger) while the largest are Mpio and Oregon (four times higher than Shuffle). In terms of weight, all are light, but there are differences: Ipod Shuffle is also lighter (22 grams) and the heaviest Mpio (63 grams). Ipod Both are flatter than the rest, so they are easier to store and transport.
Added functions Sony, Acer and both Ipod no radio, but the headphones that includes Acer do incorporate this feature. The eight for classifying data in folders (a very important provision to listen to the discs one by one), and they can be used as a storage medium to get files from one PC to another, as in the past was done with floppy disks. None can expand the memory. Sony, Ipod Shuffle and Oregon do not record voice and the iPod Nano provides this option by using an optional microphone not included. Ipod Nano is the largest number of functions (calendar, alarm, games ...). The timer has Samsung and Oregon can be used underwater.

To measure battery life the same song was played at maximum volume until the computers were turned off. Sony, with nearly 50 hours, endured double the second most durable (MPIO, 25 hours) and eight times more than the least (Blu-Sens, only 6 hours). Other players with a limited duration were Oregon (9 hours) and Acer (10 hours). To charge the battery of both Ipod and Oregon require a computer, which makes this operation when there is no access to a computer. Blu-Sens in the battery can be charged with a conventional plug, the rest, the other five players, operate on batteries. Sony and two iPod models require the use of a specific program to transfer songs from PC to player, which is a nuisance for the user, you may want to use the same system to transfer files that are used (such as , Windows Explorer). Neither Ipod can be used from Linux or from a pre-Windows 2000 (the current XP, yes) and analyzed the Sony player does not work on Linux or Mac OS. In the other seven, while incorporating its own program, its use is optional as is compatible with any operating system that accepts USB: Windows, Mac OS or Linux. But these programs with added features are Windows only, except in the case of the two iPod, that also function in Mac OS. No team has in mind for users of Linux.

As for the connection, studied nine players connect to the PC through the USB port to transfer songs. Acer is the only one that does not support USB 2.0 standard, so it is much slower in the transfer. Ipod Nano supports connection FireWire standard is not as widespread as USB, but faster. According to consumer. Six regular users tested and rated various aspects of these players from 1 to 10. Their favorites were Samsung (7.6 points), followed by Ipod Nano and Blu-Sens (both 7.3 points) and Creative (7.2). Worst MP3 player is based on users Ipod Shuffle (5.8 points), especially the lack of screen, making it difficult to select the songs. The most penalized by the users has been the lack of equalizer and Screen (iPod Shuffle), the lack of radio (both Ipod and Sony). According to users, more attractive design is the iPod Nano and more difficult to use, Acer.

The users rated the sound quality subjectively. To do this, they heard a song with two handsets: those that included each team and other high-end. The main conclusion is that the quality difference is not noticed when using the same headphones, so sound quality did not depend on the player but the headphones that includes, among which there were significant differences. The headphones were the worst rated Oregon (6.3 points), followed by Ipod Shuffle and Mpio (6.8 points), while the best were the Ipod Nano (8.2 points), although they are more comfortable the Ipod Shuffle. The best screens. Ipod Shuffle is the only one without a screen, according to the manufacturer because it is designed so that the songs are played randomly. The other eight teams, they do have screens and are therefore easier to handle, they also offer this feature random. The eight screens are LCD type. One of the smaller teams, Ipod Nano, is the one with the largest screen (746 mm2, more than double than the rest), plus the color and unique ability to display images, although it has been shown that scratch easily. The smaller the Sony (141mm2) and Oregon (168 mm2).

Seven of the guarantees were not correct. Acer and Sony for not including even a guarantee document, and Creative, Samsung, Mpio, and both Apple to offer one year warranty instead of the two mandatory. That guarantee is not included or is not appropriate does not mean that the consumer is protected during the two years required by law if you keep the receipt.
* We have analyzed nine portable MP3 flash memory, small and light that come to replace walkmans and discmans. To enter songs into the player is essential to have a computer. They cost from 85 euro
* (Acer Advanced) to 210 euros (Ipod Nano), although the latter has more capacity than the rest (2Gb-aprox.32-hours, compared to 512 Mb -8 hours-most and 256 Mb -4 hours-of Mpio).
* All teams are safe, but by putting it in the laboratory at 50 drops Acer stopped working and Ipod Nano suffered numerous superficial scratches on your screen.
* Only Blu-Sens guarantees and Oregon are correct, others, or give only a year when you have to take two years or have no guarantee document.
* Sony offers the longest range (50 hours), well above the rest. The iPod and Sony have no radio. Best Headphones Ipod Nano.
* The users rated: Samsung, Blu-Sens, Ipod Nano and Creative.
* The best value for money is Nanoplus Creative Zen, cheap (112 euros, 512 Mb) and is valued by users. Other interesting features: Sony, for its long range and Samsung, the best proof of use and the only songs that reads free format Ogg.
